Mixed enrollment numbers this year for EVSC

VANDERBURGH CO., IN (WFIE) -

New enrollment numbers are in for the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, with many programs showing increases while other numbers have decreased.

Enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year stands at a total of 22,986 students.

That's as of the official count day for the State of Indiana.

This number includes all students-including those being served in specialty programs such as the EVSC Virtual Academy, the Southern Indiana Career & Tech Center and those from outside agencies.

"Our families are interested in what we're offering," said Marsha Jackson, Chief Communication Officer with EVSC. "They realize we have a variety of options for their kids so they can really pursue the interest areas they're interested in."

Although most of those specialty programs are showing an increase in enrollment, some of those students aren't counted by the state.

On the funding count, Jackson says the corporation is down about 90 students.

Emily Mieure : "Is that a significant number of students?"

Jackson: "It's not horribly significant. I mean 90 students is a big number but not a huge number. We're fine. We have great programs. We're marketing those programs so that everyone's aware of them and I think we're going to be just fine."

Sarah Weitkamp has a first grader and a third grader in the EVSC. She says one reason she chooses the corporation for her children is for those unique opportunities they offer.

"Just getting involved with extra curricular activities," said Weitkamp. "Right now they do basketball and cheerleading with the PTA."

As for the slight decrease in funded enrollment, the EVSC says it's typical and this is about where they expected to be.

The EVSC is currently holding open houses for a lot of their innovative programs, including one Thursday night.

It's for their Randall Shepard Academy, which is a two year academy for juniors and seniors.

It's at Harrison High Thursday at 6.
