Boys organize fun run to benefit friend with leukemia

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An 8-year-old Portland boy recently diagnosed with stage 4 leukemia is getting some love and fundraising help from four good friends.

Cole Hexum is undergoing an aggressive form of chemotherapy at Randall Children's Hospital.

Cole is involved in a lot of sports, including soccer, and some of the children in his soccer league have started a charity group called Kidz On The Run.

Cater and Jonah Ferguson, and Joey and Jimmy Glaab, came up with the idea to hold fun runs to raise money for children's charities. On Sunday, they'll hold a fun run to benefit Cole.

"We want to make a difference in our community and help a lot of other kids who have cancer like Cole, and other diseases, too," said Jimmy Glaab.

Cole's mother, Michelle Hexum, had cancer herself three years ago. She said she's grateful for the overwhelming support.

"You know, it really does make it easier. When I was going through it, we didn't really allow people to help because I thought, 'I'm the mom. It's just me. I'll be fine. Whatever, it's not a big deal.' But it's different when it's your child," Michelle Hexum said.

The Fun Run for "Team Cole" is Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Jacob Wismer Elementary School.
