Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve debuts new Raptor Wing

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

The Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve opened its new 'Birds of Prey' exhibit Wednesday morning.

The new Alcoa Raptor Wing is home to nine birds, including hawks, owls and one very large turkey vulture.

The facility was completed earlier this year thanks to a grant from the Alcoa Foundation.

All of the birds housed there are injured and couldn't survive on their own in the wild. The nature preserve uses the birds to engage and educate visitors at the park.

The birds also make special trips to schools and community programs to help people learn about the different species that they have living in their own backyards.

"This facility is state of the art," said Executive Director of the Wesselman Nature Society John Foster. "This is where they come to rest and they are working birds, that's why we have them. Each one of the birds you see here, they have gotten a second chance on life."

The Raptor Wing is open daily and visitors can see the exhibits while walking along the trail.

We want to remind you the Harvest Festival is happening Saturday at the Nature Preserve from 3:00 to 9:00 p.m. There will be hay rides for the kids as well as a special raptor show with some of these birds.
