EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

The Evansville Fire Department hosted a Public Safety Fair Sunday afternoon.

Kids had the opportunity to climb aboard ladder trucks and try their luck on a combat obstacle course. It gave them the opportunity to explore emergency response vehicles without the threat of an actual emergency.

Braxton Bishop looks like a natural in the driver's seat of the Evansville Fire Department's ladder truck, but he says he wants to do what his dad does.

"He hunts for bad guys," Braxton said.

So he'll be trading his fire helmet for a police badge.

The Public Safety Day gave kids like Braxton an opportunity to see emergency vehicles up close, and to learn what emergency response teams do when they arrive to the scene of an accident.

"For the children, they're our next generation, so we want them to grow up knowing what type of wonderful agencies are there to respond in case they have an emergency," EDF District Chief Dan Grimm said.

Patrick Berryhill is an Evansville firefighter and brought his son to learn about what he does.

"I'm proud of what I do and I like to share that with my son. This is a great chance for him to see what's out there as far as what I do," Berryhill said.

The Ohio Valley Search and Rescue dogs were on hand for visitors to learn how they're trained to find missing persons.

Before the day was done, kids were challenged with a combat course to see just how hard it is to navigate through a smokey building with some very heavy gear.

"This is a non-emergency situation where people can sit back and relax and see what all we have to offer," Grimm said.

The Evansville Fire Department says the event was an alternative to the traditional open house, so they could showcase the wider array of emergency equipment all in one place.
