INDIANAPOLIS (WFIE) -

This weekend, four Evansville firefighters ran in the Community Health Network Marathon Relay in Indianapolis.

Team members John Chapman, Scott Weber, Shawn Wiethop, and Eric Jamison came in first overall in the Male Relay with a total time of 2:59:20.

They participated in the relay as part of the EFD's Firefighter Fitness Initiative. The firefighters said they wanted to go beyond Chief's Mike Connely's expectations.

Each firefighter ran seven miles in the relay.

"We are trying to set a good example for some of the newer recruits coming in. As they are making their way through the stations, they see the seasoned veterans working out every day. They see us staying on top of our fitness level, so I think it's a good example for them," said Jamison.

The four said they were very excited to come in first because this is the first relay they've ever run together.

They say they trained for a year.

The four local firefighters are 40 and older with over 10 years service in the department.
