Phase two of Mt. Vernon riverfront project nearing completion

MT. VERNON, IN (WFIE) -

The riverfront in Mt. Vernon is seeing new life.

Work is almost complete on the second phase of improvements there, including an amphitheater.

The Ohio is a huge asset to Mt. Vernon and over the past few years, they've used more than $2 million of grant funds to make improvements, like an amphitheater, in hopes of drawing more people.

City Council Member Steve Fueling, who's heavily involved in this riverfront project, tells 14 News that plan is working.

He says phase two of their riverfront improvements should wrap up by the end of November.

In this phase, they've added that amphitheater that faces out toward the river, put in an overlook that's attached to it, and an interactive water fountain for the kids to enjoy in the summertime.

They're still working on some finishing touches such as signs, a railing and a concession stand are all still coming.

They're hoping sometime next month they'll be able to have some kind of dedication ceremony down here.

And others are getting involved, too. A group of ladies in town, who make up the Mt. Vernon Azalea Trail Committee, have planted 300 azaleas near the riverfront.
