Now's your chance to try and spot the Grey Lady

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Now's your chance to hunt for the infamous "Grey Lady" ghost who reportedly haunts Evansville's Willard Library.

The library is hosting free Ghost Tours this weekend and next weekend.

The Grey Lady ghost was first reported to have been seen in Willard Library in the late 1930s.
Since that time, those looking, and not looking, for the ghost have reported unexplained events and sights.

"One morning I was sitting at the desk over there and a woman from Michigan called and she said do you see the ghost. I said, 'no, I don't see her.' She said she's sitting at the front table. Right now, I see her," said a library assistant Peggy Newton.

Eva Sanford works at Willard Library. She says one morning, she had to come in before anyone else. That's when she says she encountered the ghost.

"I went through that doorway and I smelled a strong overpowering smell like a cheap perfume and that's why I think it's a true story," Sanford said.

If you're hoping to have your own experience with the Grey Lady, you can go on one of the library's Ghost Tours. Eva says this is one of their busiest times of year.

"People come from all over the country. We get inundated with crowds of people because they are free and because this is a unique building. It's over 126 years old and we're the only one with the Grey Lady," Sanford said.

Those who work at the library say even though they believe she exists, they aren't scared of her.

Peggy"I know people who will just not set foot in this building because of that and I tell them it's a library, you know. If she shows up, she's not going to hurt you," Newton said.

You can go on one of the Ghost Tours tonight. It starts at 7:00 p.m. on the first floor of Willard.

The tours continue tomorrow and are next weekend, too. You must register online.
