NEWBURGH, IN (WFIE) -

Police are keeping a close watch on Newburgh Elementary School after reports of a stranger trying to lure children to his car during recess.

It's also been reported, the man has shown the children pornography.

14 News spoke with one mother who was outraged that she had to find out about her daughter being approached by a strange man from her daughter, and not from the school.

"He tried to lure her with candy to come with him to his truck," the mother said. "He also showed her a pornographic picture of a naked woman in a shower"

The mother of a first grade student at Newburgh Elementary says when her daughter ran away from a stranger Wednesday, he cursed and threatened to punch her.

But the mother says she didn't find out about the incident until her daughter came home hours later.

"I was not notified in any way," she said. "It's very unsettling to know that this occurred and it was not handled in a way that wasn't effective in any way to help other students."

Principal Kurt Krodel says the school acted appropriately in waiting to notify her.

"We were still in the investigative stage, you don't want to call a parent for no reason and alarm them by giving them misinformation," he told 14 News.

The principal did notify police when they say a similar incident happened the day before.

"There was an incident where someone had been showing pictures to a child on recess," said Newburgh Police Chief Brett Sprinkle.

Chief Sprinkle says they are some similarities between the two incidents.

"There are some differences in the two stories, so we're investigating both instances separately," said Chief Sprinkle.

Officials say it's important to talk to your children about not approaching strangers.

"She feels threatened to be out on the playground," the child's mother said. "She's going to be constantly watching the fence line and at six years old, I don't think that's appropriate."

Students brought a letter home Thursday, detailing the incidents to make parents aware. Police say they do have a suspect in the first case, but haven't made any arrests.
