FDA issues new advisory for drugs from company linked to meningitis

EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

In response to the recent FDA expanded advisory, the Community Patient Safety Coalition (CPSC) of Southwest Indiana & Kentucky is issuing the following local update as it relates to the tri-state area.

Out of an abundance of caution, the FDA has recommended that providers contact patients who have received other medications from the New England Compounding Center (NECC) purchased since May 21, 2012. Coalition member organizations, Deaconess Health System and St. Mary's Health, have administered medications that were part of this expanded voluntary recall.

The CDC does not have firm evidence that fungal infections have been caused by exposure to these additional NECC products. It remains unclear what, if any, risks these other medications pose to patients.

Each facility is currently in the process of contacting their own affected patients with more detailed information and guidance via US Mail. Both Deaconess and St. Mary's anticipate mailing letters to all patients involved in this advisory by the end of Wednesday, October 17.
