NEW HARMONY, IN (WFIE) -

Officials say the newly opened New Harmony Fire Station is leading to faster response times.

The new station is larger than the old one and has 26 volunteer members.

Officials say its location right off Highways 66 and 69, compared to downtown, makes it easier for crews to get to the scene of emergencies.

"Now we can get right off the highway, get in a truck and if it's out of town, get right back on the highway, so it's a faster response," firefighter Hannah Duncan said.

A grant covered most of the cost of the $600,000 station.

Officials say the Posey County Community Foundation is planning to pay for a helicopter pad to be installed next to the fire station.

Construction could start in the next few weeks.
