Locations of Noble Romans closed by order of the state

Posted: Updated:

Closed by order of the state, signs have been posted at Noble Romans Restaurants in Evansville and Jasper.

Our media partner, WITZ, in Jasper reports the restaurant's operator failed to pay sales taxes as far back as 2006, and at least four stores have now been shut down by the State of Indiana. Three of those stores have been closed in Evansville and one in Jasper.

Jaz Incorporated is the company who owns these local Noble Roman's Restaurants. According to Jaz Inc's President of Operations, Russ Shaw, the state has revoked the company's retail merchant's certificate due to those unpaid back taxes.

According to WITZ in Jasper, more than 60 tax warrants are pending against Jaz Inc. in Dubois County. Not to be confused with arrest warrants, the Department of Revenue's Bob Dittmer says 'tax warrants' are state tax bills.

Dittmer will not specifically comment on Jaz Inc's situation, but Dittmer says companies often get into these situations when they don't float the state sales tax paid by customers, to the state as they should.

Shaw acknowledges the company has had state tax issues, though he will not specify what those are. Shaw also says a low demand combined with higher costs for the restaurant was a contributing factor in the restaurant's closure.

Shaw also says smaller restaurants like the Noble Roman's Expresses and gas station locations remain open.

Those that are closed are the full-service locations at the Ross Center, University Heights, the Washington Square Mall, and the Jasper location.

Shaw also says he is optimistic that the Washington Square Mall location will re-open soon, though he isn't sure when.

We will stay with this story and update it as we learn further details.
