Officials at Mater Dei High School speak out after its statue of the Virgin Mary was vandalized.
They say the statue was spray-painted with blue paint and they believe the vandals are from Reitz High School.
Mater Dei's president says the school was vandalized last year at this time during the week leading up to the Reitz - Mater Dei football game.
He believes this is a case of "kids being kids," but said defacing a religious symbol is troubling.
"I assume it has to do with, you know, a high school rivalry," said Mater Dei president Tim Dickel. "You know, I like to think that, you know, it's just kids being kids. However, I feel like with them painting the statue of Mary Mother of God, it's gone too far and I'd just like to see it all end."
Dickel said they plan to clean the statue rather than replace it.
Last week, a Mater Dei student admitted to vandalizing the "R" on the Reitz campus.
