The Owensboro Fire Department is using Fire Prevention Week to reach out to the community, and make sure your homes are protected against fires.
The fire department is using the entire week and the power of social media to encourage residents to perform certain checks and tests around their homes.
The department's put out a couple checklists. Here is a snapshot of the checklist:
The National Safety Council list suggests checking to make sure your home's free of hazards like frayed wires and overloaded outlets.
It also suggests making sure the correct bulb wattage is used for lamps and other appliances in your home.
One thing that might slip your mind, always remember to have an annual inspection of your furnace or heating system.
The other list comes from the National Fire Protection Association and suggest that you just take about 20 minutes to do an entire home fire safety inspection.
Check things like smoke detectors and fire escapes.
You might also want to think about your habits when it comes to cooking and heating safety that are listed on the checklist.
