Water customers ready for long boil advisory to be solved

WARRICK CO., IN (WFIE) -

For close to two months now, water customers in Lynnville have been dealing with a boil advisory, and as you can imagine, most are ready for this problem to be solved.

"It's an inconvenience, you know. It's something I shouldn't have to worry about," said resident Travis Taylor.

"I mean it's getting frustrating because it's been way too long now," said resident Rocky Smith.

Smith says the week long boil advisory in Lynnville is cutting into her budget.

"It's more than once a week that we have to go and get bottled water," Smith said.

Smith and Taylor both work at Meyer's Country Grill just off I-64. The restaurant, they tell 14 News, isn't effected by the advisory, but at home they aren't as lucky.

"It's just awful. Yeah, I wouldn't even give my dogs it," Smith said.

While some say they're drinking the water anyway, the local schools aren't taking any chances. At Lynnville Elementary and Tecumseh High School, the drinking fountains are off limits.

"I can say it is precautionary, but we certainly encourage folks to observe it and boil water that they're going to consume," said Amy Hartsock.

Hartsock is with the Indiana Department of Environmental Management. She says the cause of this advisory is the lower level of chlorine in the water.

As far as a cause, Hartsock says there could be multiple factors.

"The distance that the water needs to travel and also its stored there in a large tank and warm temperatures can cause the chlorine levels to dissipate more quickly," Hartsock said.

In the short term, IDEM says the operator of Lynnville's water system will be chlorinating the water storage tank and flushing the system to bring in a fresh supply of water. They're hoping that, along with cooler temperatures, will help.

IDEM says tests don't show any bacteria in the system, which is a good thing.

As far as a long term solution, IDEM says they may need to provide chlorination which may take some engineering.

No word on how much longer this boil advisory will be in effect. 14 News will keep you posted.
