Roberts Stadium demolition date still up in the air

At the city council meeting, Roberts Stadium came up once again. At the city council meeting, Roberts Stadium came up once again.

The demolition of Roberts Stadium won't begin until the city council approves the funding for it.

Monday night, the council voted against transferring some funds to be used for that demolition.

We've been hearing since this summer about plans to tear down Roberts Stadium to make way for a park.

The decision to demolish the stadium came from the parks board, but a demolition date is up in the air.

At the city council meeting, Roberts Stadium came up once again.

At the beginning of August, an auction of just about everything inside ended up netting about $187,000 for the city.

So last night, Executive Director of the Parks Department, Denise Johnson, says they were looking to have that money moved into a contractual account so they could hopefully use it for demo purposes. But she says she was a little surprised when the city council voted not to transfer that money.

Some city council members 14 News spoke with on Tuesday tell us they're interested in seeing the building be put up for sale so that it can make some money for the city.

"To my knowledge, and I believe there's been a legal opinion cited of this, the property's actually owned by the board of park commissioners.  I do not believe that the city council can supercede that and take the property and sell it or auction it.  That would be a question for the legal department to answer, but to my knowledge, that has been answered and they cannot do it," Johnson said.

The parks board had received several bids from companies wanted to do the demolition work.
But right now, Johnson says they can't move forward and award a contract until the money has been appropriated from city council.

The council will be discussing the 2013 budget next week.
