Evansville working to crack down on graffiti

Posted: Updated:
EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

On Tuesday, the City of Evansville announced a new online tool they hope will put a stop to neighborhood graffiti.

Tuesday's joint press conference was held at the old Euclid Apartment Building that has plenty of graffiti on its walls, and where city officials demonstrated how easy it is to get rid of it.

The conference was held by Keep Evansville Beautiful, United Neighborhoods of Evansville, and Evansville Police. Members of the partnership say both 'gang' and what they call 'garbage graffiti' is a growing problem in Evansville's neighborhoods.

They say citizens can now more easily report graffiti 'tagging' through the city's Citizens Concern Portal. The online tool can be found on the city's website and can also be used as a smart phone app.

City officials also say they will be able to provide citizens with resources for easy graffiti removal.

"If graffiti is on your property, it's up to the citizen to remove. But Keep Evansville Beautiful does have the information available to provide to you, and shows you what kind of resources are out there to remove the graffiti. The bottom line is, if you see graffiti on a public piece of property, let us know so we can address it," Evansville Mayor Lloyde Winnecke said.

Mayor Winnecke and Evansville Police say they encourage all citizens to take it upon themselves to remove graffiti from private property.
