New security measures have come to Evansville's Greenway and even more are in the works.

The city just replaced 70 lights to keep the Greenway well lit, and now, officials are looking into getting better signage.

Residents seem to have a good thing or two to say about Evansville's nearly completed Greenway.

"The sunset and all of that, it's a comfortable place," USI student Brandon Kemp said.

But, for some, it's a little less comfortable after the sun goes down.

"Sometimes at night it can get a little scary," said Julie Huffman, also a USI student.

To combat scary feelings, the city just approved $7,000 worth of new lights. 12 new LED lights at the Shirley James Gateway Plaza and 70 new lights along the river.

"We felt that was an important part for the security and safety along the riverfront," said Glenn Boberg with Evansville Parks & Recreation.

Greenway board members are also looking into installing signs to help people have a better idea of where they are.

"The board has come up with an idea to put street signs on the sides of the bridges, both sides, so that people will then have a better familiarity when they're walking or riding on the bike," Boberg said.

The final half-mile stretch of the Greenway is expected to be completed next month. With the new lights, officials hope passageway will be more than just inviting.

"This gives them an opportunity to be in a safe place, to have an area that they can walk along to enjoy their time outside," Boberg said.

Recently, park officials say they've dealt with thousands of dollars worth of vandalism to the old lights. Evansville Police have been monitoring the Greenway since then.
