Three periods were not enough to decide Evansville's preseason finale Sunday at Memorial Coliseum as the Evansville IceMen fell to the Fort Wayne Komets.
Unlike their 6-3 victory on Saturday against the Komets, the IceMen found themselves in a defensive struggle. Scoreless late in the game, Fort Wayne's Matt Firman scored on a rebound goal at the 14:26 mark of the third period.
Moments after the Komets' tie-breaking tally, the IceMen answered at the 16:57 mark of the third period when Daniel Tetrault scored on a feed from captain Todd Robinson.
Fittingly, the tightly contested affair between these in-state rivals went to overtime.
The first look at overtime action for either team in the preseason resulted in a quick conclusion. Just 1:06 into the overtime period, Fort Wayne's Daniel Maggio beat IceMen rookie net-minder Paul Karpowich on the power play for the game-winner.
Karpowich, who faced a total of 37 shots, accumulated a .946 save percentage in the low-scoring contest.
The IceMen only attempted 20 shots-on-goal against the Komets' net-minding duo of Francois Lacerte and Larkin Saalfrank.
An early opportunity for Evansville was diminished by Lacerte in the second period when he denied IceMen Forward Josh Beaulieu's bid at a penalty shot goal. Lacerte's effort against Beaulieu was his final save of the night as he was then relieved by Saalfrank.
The power play opportunities for the IceMen were unsuccessful as the team failed to convert on its five chances.
Evansville's penalty kill was perfect in regulation, denying Fort Wayne's first five chances, but allowed the power play goal in overtime that ended the game.
