EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Wednesday was about much more than fried food along Franklin Street.
It was a very special day for hundreds of mentally and physically challenged kids at the Fall Festival, and a chance for them to leave their struggles behind and just be kids.
"Some of these children, it's the only time they get to come down here. Their parents can bring them down, but they can't get on the rides," said a Kids' Day attendee.
A special day filled with plenty of rides and plenty of games.
Those were just a few of the highlights of the Fall Festival's Special Kids' Day.
"They are so excited every year to come to this activity. It's a wonderful thing that the Nut Club, that they do for the children," said Ann Debes, who attended Kids' Day.
"I was a kid one day and I enjoyed having fun. I want these kids to have as much fun as I did when I was a kid," said Special Kids' Day Chair, Brian Schaffstein.
Workers and volunteers helped kids get on and off the rides. Teachers and the kids' families showed their support.
"It's awesome. It's awesome to see her smile. She smiles all the time anyway, but it's just great," father Tom Debes said.
And for the kids, their smiles say it all.
"Just look at 'em. The smiles on their face. Look at how much fun they're having," said an attendee.
Tuesday's rain postponed Kids' Day until Wednesday, but to these kids, just having the chance to be kids was well worth the wait.
After the rides, everyone enjoyed a free lunch at the VFW.
Organizers say this is the event they look forward to the most each and every year.
