HUNTINGBURG, IN (WFIE) -
Following an INDOT safety study, Huntingburg city officials say town speed limits will soon be altered.
Huntingburg's Board of Public Works and Safety says they have approved a precautionary measure to reduce speed limits through town.
One board member, Roger Cox, says the limits that will be affected are those on US 231, which runs directly through town. Currently, the speed limits there start at 45 on the edge of town, dropping to 25 through town.
Cox says the proposed new layout, influenced by INDOT and the Huntingburg Police Department, will start at 45 on the edge of town, and drop in increments of five down to 25 miles per hour through town.
Cox says the town hasn't had many accidents as a result of the current set-up, but he feels it's only a matter of time before an accident happens.
"I think it's more of a situation where it's an accident waiting to happen. The de-acceleration coming into town is as much as 20 miles an hour, from 45 down to 25. And now, we'll have a situation where it's going to be a gradual declaration coming into town," Cox said.
Cox says he isn't sure when the new speed limits will take effect, but he estimates it will be between thirty and sixty days.
