O'boro second graders learn about fire safety

Posted: Updated:
OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Owensboro second graders will learn about fire safety awareness thanks to a program the Owensboro Fire Department has conducted for the past 18 years.

The fire department does this program every year for three days and between 300 and 500 kids learn about fire safety awareness.

The fire department has every second grader in the city schools and Owensboro Catholic schools go through a fire safety awareness program.

Kids get to go through a fire safety house with artificial smoke and have to learn to crawl out through multiple ways, since exits are often blocked during a real fire.

They also learn about stop drop and roll, smoke detectors, and why playing with matches is dangerous.

Wednesday is the last day, but it's also when the most students are expected to take part in this unique experience at 9:30 Wednesday morning.

The fire department says they target second graders and not younger children because they say second graders are old enough to understand the dangers of a real fire.

They say second graders are old enough to learn about these techniques and important tips like not going back inside once they are safely outside.
