HENDERSON CO., KY (WFIE) -

A Henderson business was broken into overnight and a vehicle was stolen. But, this wasn't just any car. Thieves drove off in a hearse.

Managers at Raben Tire say early Sunday morning they found a fence damaged and the hearse they were repairing was gone.

"I came in actually to meet another employee here to go do something, you know, deer hunting stuff. We realized a gate had been damaged out back," said Danny Long, a service manager at Raben Tire & Auto Service.

Long says he and another employee then discovered the hearse missing from the back parking lot around 5:30 a.m. Sunday morning and called police.

"That's kind of what we was wondering. Why they'd steal a hearse?" Long said.

Henderson Police tell us one of their officers thought he saw a white male driving the black 1978 Cadillac Fleetwood in Henderson before it was reported stolen.

"It is unusual. It's not something that's going to blend in at WalMart or driving down the road," said Henderson Police Officer Jennifer Richmond.

Then on Monday just before 1:00 p.m., a resident of a South Green Street apartment complex called police.

"Stated that there was a possibly stolen hearse parked in front of their apartment," Richmond said.

When officers arrived at 324 South Green, they found the stolen hearse with its broken windshield and antique plates. They say the plates had been switched from antique Indiana plates to Kentucky.

Everyone we talked with was just hoping that someone saw the person who made that unusual theft.

"It's just strange, very strange," Richmond said.

Raben managers say the hearse wasn't in use by a funeral home. It's owned by a Henderson resident for costume party use around Halloween.

If you have any information, call Crimestoppers or Henderson Police.
