KY kicks off new tax amnesty program

Posted: Updated:
KENTUCKY (WFIE) -

Kentucky is kicking off a tax amnesty program for delinquent taxpayers.

It starts today and lasts until the end of November.

If you owe back taxes, you can pay without penalties or fees, but you do have to apply for this program.

Pre-filled packets have already been sent out to businesses and individuals that are eligible to participate in this program.

A similar program took place about 10 years ago and actually brought in millions of dollars for the state to help pay for services it provides.

According to the Department of Revenue, Kentucky has about $170,000 delinquent taxpayers, many of which can be helped by the program.

"It's gonna be beneficial to these businesses and individuals because they will be avoiding the higher rates," said Donny Smith from the Owensboro Taxpayer Service Center. "They're gonna be able to pay their back taxes for the period. Our amnesty period is after December 1st of 2001 and before October 1st of 2011."
