Several American flags were burned over the weekend in Newburgh. Neighbors say they woke up to find their stars and stripes, had been torched.

Now, authorities in Warrick County want to know who would have done this.

There are a couple of issues here. Neighbors are upset someone would set fire to the flag, and in at least one instance, they worry their home could have been badly damaged as well.

Warrick County Sheriff Brett Kruse says, in all, about six flags were burned. This happened sometime in the early morning hours this past Sunday.

One neighbor 14 News spoke to said he heard a noise overnight and went outside, but didn't see anything.

The next morning, he saw the charred remains of his flag on the ground, and that flag hung just a few feet from his house.

"It's very dangerous," Sheriff Kruse said. "You know, a house with vinyl siding or vinyl soffit or overhang that would ignite easily you can do extensive damage, burn a house down. People asleep in the house and then you've got even worse situation."

Sheriff Kruse doesn't know who did this, but thinks it was probably kids.
