BEAVER DAM, KY (WFIE) -

An Ohio County man is in jail Thursday night, charged with murdering his estranged wife.

Kentucky State Police say they were called to Suburban Manor Apartments by Beaver Dam authorities around 7:00 Thursday morning.

Investigators say 32-year-old Jeremie Simpson, of Hartford, fatally shot 24-year-old Dami-Ann Simpson and was arrested at the scene.

Those who knew Dami-Ann say she had an infectious spirit and will be missed.

"She's always full of laughter. It made every, it was contagious, you know? Everybody laughed with her," said Dami-Ann's co-worker Shetika Flake. "But we all enjoyed her and it's hard to believe she's gone."

Shetika believes nothing about Wednesday night or early Thursday morning seemed out of the ordinary.

"She came to work normally, laughing, carrying on, you know? Cutting it up with everyone. It was an ordinary night you know?"

According to police, Dami-Ann was shot to death early Thursday morning by her estranged husband Jeremie Simpson.

Authorities say the victim had a protective order against the suspect.

"He obviously violated that, but there was considering they were still legally married. They were estranged from each other, lived in separate places and that's where detectives later learned that he had unlawfully entered that dwelling waiting for her to come home from her work and that's when he confronted her and ultimately killed her," said Kentucky State Police Trooper Corey King.

The investigation is ongoing. Authorities say more information may be revealed when that's complete.

"There are some substantial evidence that we're looking into that he had kidnapped some victims prior to him engaging with his estranged wife."

For Shetika, the loss will continue to be felt.

"Praying for her and her family," she said. "It's hard to believe this all happened."

Jeremie is charged with a ten counts, including murder, kidnapping, wanton endangerment, burglary, violation of an emergency protection order, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

He plead not guilty. A preliminary hearing is set for October 8th.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
