Kentucky hosting Take Back Days for prescription drugs

Posted: Updated:
KENTUCKY (WFIE) -

Law enforcement officials are now saying more than 6,000 people become addicted to prescription pain medications everyday.

Now, several agencies are holding prescription drug Take Back Days on Saturday to keep those drugs out of abusers' hands.

Kentucky State Police say this began back in 2010 and they've collected over 2,000 pounds of prescription medicine.

This program is all about removing potentially dangerous, unused substances from homes.

Participants can dispose of medicine in its original container, or by emptying the contents into a disposal box at the drop off site. All solid pharmaceutical products and liquids will be accepted. Residents are encouraged to make sure those liquids are sealed tightly.

Some of the items that won't be acceptable include injectables, syringes, and then obviously meth and marijuana.

"It's free to the public and it's beneficial for everything not just law enforcement because then of course it doesn't get into the hands of people that don't need them, but also to the public for providing the proper way to dispose of them," KSP Trooper Stu Recke said.

If you're interested in participating, it's this Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at every KSP Post across the state.
