Allegiant Air adding more flights at O'boro airport

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE) -

Allegiant Air is adding a couple more flights to its schedule at Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport beginning next month.

The airline will offer two more flights during the week to Orlando Sanford International Airport

These additional flights will also take place in November.

Airport officials say that both the upcoming holiday travel season and the soon to be completed terminal expansion were both reasons for offering the additional flights.

The benefit for the flights is two-fold: Passengers have more options and FAA funding for the airport could increase because of the higher passenger traffic.

That money helps pay for things like improving runways and the terminal expansion project.

The current airport holding area, where passengers go after the security checkpoint, is being tripled in size.

Airport officials see these changes, both in construction and scheduling, as ways to attract other flights.

"We're growing the airport not just for a temporary increase in flights but for the long-term growth of this airport," said Bob Whitmer. "You know, we've also added cape air who flies out here about three times a day to St. Louis."

As of right now, the official opening date for that new terminal addition is scheduled to be November 15.
