HENDERSON CO, KY (WFIE) -

Henderson County High School student and Cadet Major, Brittany Wilkie, was awarded the Legion of Valor Bronze Cross for Achievement. SGT David W. Alley, United States Marine Corps and holder of the Navy Cross and Purple Heart, presented the prestigious award to Cadet Major Wilkie on September 25, 2012 during a ceremony at Henderson County High School.

"It is considered such a high award that the Legion of Valor organization requires a Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, Navy Cross or Air Force Cross recipient to present the Bronze Cross," said Colonel R. Dwight Keown, Henderson County High School JROTC Senior Army Instructor. "Presenter SGT David W. Alley received his Navy Cross during the Korean War."

Cadet Major Brittany Wilkie is the only cadet in Kentucky to receive a Bronze Cross and certificate which is awarded to one of every 4,000 cadets in JROTC.

The Legion of Valor Bronze Cross is an annual award sponsored by the Legion of Valor of the United States of America, Inc. for scholastic excellence in military and academic subjects. It is awarded to outstanding cadets who completed their LET 3 in a four year program.

In order to be considered an honored cadet, students must be in the top 10% of the JROTC class and the top 10% of overall academic class.

Each recipient must also be recommended by the Senior Army Instructor and the principal of the school.

Points are awarded based on military/academic scholarship and grades, military/academic leadership, demonstration of discipline, courtesy and character.
