A photographic miracle in Harrisburg

HARRISBURG, IL (KFVS) - It's been nearly seven months since the deadly EF-4 tornado tore through the Harrisburg community.

Little miracles continue to find their way out of the debris and damage.

That was the case with a picture of a little girl found in a field a few days after the storm hit.

A group of FFA volunteers were cleaning up a field nearly five miles northeast of Harrisburg when they came across a perfectly good picture of a little girl. And they gave it to the Saline County EMA.

"We just knew when we saw the photo that it was something that was near and dear," said Allen Ninness director Saline County EMA. "It was something that somebody had really went to a lot of trouble to put on canvas and take care of. I knew if it was a picture of my children that I would definitely want it back."

So Ninness put the picture up on the agency's Facebook page and found out who was in the picture and who it belonged too.

"I'm so happy they found it and restored it," said Janis Choisser. "Because you can replace your furniture, you can replace your house and things like that. But you can't replace your family photos, these are the important things."

But, before the picture of Choisser's granddaughter could be returned it needed some tender loving care.

And that task was entrusted to the folks at Joy's Hallmark in Harrisburg.

"You really can't replace those kinds of things because you can't shrink Laura back to a five year old little girl," said Joy Wilson owner of Joy's Hallmark. "Her grandmother took that picture of her, which means even more. It's just one of those little signs that shows up that helps you have hope."

Now the little girl in the picture who grew up to be Laura Omohundro, is hoping her picture can touch many more lives.

"Hopefully hope and that everything  does come back if you have faith. And that people can start over."

Which is still a message many people in the tornado ravaged town are holding onto, as the rebuilding efforts continue for many families.
