KENTUCKY (WFIE) -

It's election season and that means campaign signs across the Tri-State.

But, be careful where you put them. Kentucky Highway Officials tell 14 News they spent the day removing the signs from state highway right of ways.

A sign that's located at the edge of an intersection is an example of one that will be removed by transportation officials because they say it's a safety issue.

Kentucky State Law prohibits any kind of advertising or political ads on state right of ways and that includes posting on utility poles.

Homeowners are encouraged to keep these signs behind the sidewalk and those without sidewalks should post signs behind the ditch line. The key is to keep these signs away from areas where highway crews mow.

Keith Todd with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says campaign signs will be more abundant in the coming months, but it's something everyone needs to keep in mind all the time.

"This does take time and effort when our crews go out there and have to pick up signs along the right of way. That costs the taxpayers because that means we're out there picking up signs to be able to mow the right of way, where normally we'd be able to just come through and mow and go on," Todd said.

All the removed signs will be moved to the state highway garage in each county and will be kept for five working days, after that they'll be thrown away.
