A Mt. Vernon man has been sentenced on federal mail fraud charges.

U.S. Attorney Joe Hogsett announced late Tuesday afternoon, that 54-year-old Richard E. Brown will serve five years in federal prison and ordered to pay $30,000 fine.

Brown was indicted by a federal grand jury last year. Brown is charged with wire fraud, mail fraud and make a false tax return for fraudulent activity.

Hogsett says Brown was a bookkeeper for a local family business and a church. He is now convicted of using credit cards of his former employer to pay for expenses of his church.

Following the theft, federal investigators claim Brown filed false tax returns. The loss to the family business is alleged to be more than a $100,000.
