HOPKINS CO., KY (WFIE) -
Drivers in Hopkins County who get a traffic ticket will soon be able to ease the penalty.
It's part of a new county attorney traffic safety program.
Many of us know what it's like to ticket on the road, but this online test will save both the county and residents time and money.
Don Tribble isn't alone when he says traffic citations are inconvenient.
"It's a burden yeah, I've got a few," said Tribble.
But soon, drivers that get a ticket can pay $125 to take a 20 question online test about driver safety, and once passed, it clears the citation from their record.
County Attorney Todd P'Pool says a ticket including court costs is much more than what this would cost you.
"Depending on the moving violation. If you run a stop sign it could be more. If it's careless driving, if you fail to yield to an emergency vehicle. So, you could have a traffic violation $250 and up," P'Pool said.
Tribble says this program will save much more than the initial money saved on the ticket.
"It's great to be off your record for insurance costs and points on your license and things like that, yeah I'm for it," said Tribble.
There are a few restrictions including if a person receives another traffic citation within 90 days they won't qualify to take the test.
"We exempt seat belt violations, we exempt DUI's and if you're speeding over 26 miles per hour you would not qualify for the program," P'Pool said.
P'Pool says once a person is cited, they should receive a notification from their office within a week giving them an opportunity to sign up for the program.
"It saves people money in tough economic times. It keeps the money here locally in your local county and it's a win-win for everyone," P'Pool said.
The program launches on October 1.
