Modern 'trial' examines Mrs. Lincoln's sanity

CHICAGO (AP) -

Legal and medical experts are taking a new look at an old question: Was Mary Todd Lincoln insane?

A trial to examine that question using modern laws and medicine is being held Monday. Real judges and lawyers will argue the case for and against a declaration of insanity. Actors will portray Mary Todd Lincoln and her son.

Abraham Lincoln's widow was committed to an asylum in 1875 and released a few months later.

Today, some experts believe her mental problems were not serious enough to require commitment. They say her son exaggerated her behavior.

Psychiatrist James Cavanaugh will be an expert witness in the trial. He hopes it will educate people about advances in treating mental illness.

A second simulated trial will take place next month in Springfield.
