It's a big day for an Owensboro organization. The Daniel Pitino Shelter broke ground for new transition housing, the first of its kind in Kentucky.
Two three bedroom houses will built that are each a thousand square feet.
This housing is for residents leaving the shelter that aren't quite ready to go back into the community yet, so they're still able to access services that are offered.
Leaders say that today is just a stepping stone for the shelter's future.
"Well, it feels great," said Father Ed Bradley. "We've been looking forward to this day for a long time just so that we can expand the program here and help the women who are ready to be transitioned back into government housing. And this will give them an additional step to go through."
Families that apply will go through a screening process.
