OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -
Christmas came early for some school children needing new clothing and shoes.
Tuesday was the annual An Evening of Shopping for the Children event in Owensboro. 500 kids got money to buy some new clothes to prepare for the colder weather.
For event organizer Alma Randolph, kids not having everything they need hits close to home.
"I grew up living in poverty after my father passed away, and so, I never forgot those childhood experiences," Randolph said.
That's why she started this annual shopping event where children received $100 to spend on clothing and shoes.
"They basically will be able to leave here with almost a full weeks supply of clothing," Randolph said.
For mother Heather Livers, it's a blessing.
"You know tough times and working families that still have, you know, to budget out for kids and what they need," Livers said.
"I'm looking for new shirts and a couple of pants," said Alex Livers, who is taking part in the event.
"Glitter and fashionable stuff," saidAlexys Livers on what she's looking for.
Heather said, "With help from the outside, it really helps out a lot."
Livers isn't the only mom who appreciates the event.
"Knowing they have the things they need that the parents can't afford to get right now because of the way the economy is. It's hard to find jobs," said Angela Laney, who is also taking her kids shopping.
Tuesday's timing couldn't be better for Blaine Laney. She's celebrating her birthday with new," Really, really bright tennis shoes."
The money for shopping comes from different fundraisers, a couple grants, private donors, and of course, the annual Alma Randolph Christmas Concert. The concert falls this year on December 16th.
