OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -
Police say 18-year-old Travis Aubrey has died after being hit by a truck while riding his bicycle.
Around 6:30 Tuesday night, Owensboro Police say Aubrey was on his way home from downtown when the accident happened at the intersection of W. 2nd Street and Carter Road.
"Travis was a wonderful grandson," his grandmother, Kathy Clark said.
Kathy says she and Travis were very close. He had been living with her for the past several years. She believes that her grandson was going places in life.
"He had a lot of ambition. He traveled, I mean, he rode his bike a lot and you know it was just one of these unfortunate things that happened," Kathy said.
Some of that ambition included studying computers at Owensboro Community and Technical College. Kathy says Travis had also recently expressed an interest in child therapy.
"He had a big heart," Kathy said.
Police were called to the intersection of West Second Street and Carter Road at around 6:30 Tuesday night after Travis was hit. They say the time of day may have played a role in the accident.
"As the sun was setting and they were both traveling westbound, that may have played a factor in this incident," said Michael Hathaway with Owensboro Police Department.
An OPD accident reconstruction officer responded to the scene to investigate further.
The bicyclist was transported to the Owensboro Medical Health System emergency room where he passed away from "blunt force trauma".
Kathy says life for her will never be the same.
"I'm just gonna miss him very terribly," Kathy said.
When 14 News spoke with Kathy, she emphasized what a big heart Travis had and how he would do anything for anybody.
Police tell us they are still investigating to determine if any charges will be filed against the driver of the truck, Jared Lanham.
14 News has learned that Travis was a BMX rider and was on his way home from the Owensboro City Commission where a new BMX and skate park had just been approved.
Daviess County teacher and skate park advocate Michael Kenney, who was also at that meeting, says the last time he saw Travis, he was smiling after learning the community would have a safe park for skaters and riders to get them off the streets.
If you would like to help Travis' family, you can make a donation at Moonlite BBQ on Parrish Avenue.
