JASPER, IN (WFIE) -

The Jasper School Board has approved the purchase of new computer software that they say will help make school bus routes more efficient.

The community school corporation is about to implement some new software they say could cut transportation costs up to 50%.

Jasper Assistant Superintendent Bob Hacker says the school board has approved the purchase of the software following Hacker's personal study of the current bus routes. Hacker says so far, he has ridden 18 of the 28 total routes used by Jasper Schools to see where they can be more cost-efficient.

Hacker says the new software will interphase with the corporation's school information system, pinpointing the individual addresses of each student. Once those addresses are mapped out, Hacker says the software will be able to configure the most efficient bus routes possible.

He also says parents will be able to use the system online to track bus routes in real time.

Hacker says the bus routes are due for an update since it has been 19 years since the corporation last examined them.

"We've been out there examining things in real time. There are some of our bus routes that cross over each other three and four times during a particular ride. So, it's time to look at it. 19 years is a long time and we want to use up-to-date technology to be able to get the most for our tax dollars," Hacker said.

Hacker says if the software implementation goes as scheduled, everything should be in place and fully functional by the beginning of February.
