Pike Co, IN and Gibson Co, IN (WFIE) -
One high school student died and another is in critical condition tonight after a traffic accident Monday afternoon in Pike County.
On Monday, at 12:20 P.M. the Pike County Sheriff's office was called to the fatal two-vehicle accident.
18-year-old Kyle Butts of Francisco was driving North on State Road 61, headed to Pike Central High School to attend a welding class.
Officials say it appears his 2005 Ford Escape hydroplaned on the wet road spinning him out of control and head-on into the path of 1998 Mack Semi Tri Axle.
Butts' passenger 18-year-old Kalin Atkins of Oakland City was killed on impact. Butts was taken by ambulance to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. He is listed in critical condition.
Neither Butts nor Atkins were wearing seatbelts.
The driver of the Mack truck refused medical treatment at the scene. Accident is still under investigation.
The two students have deep roots in the community. Kalin Atkin's father is a fourth grade teacher at Oakland City Elementary. Kyle Butt's father is a firefighter in Princeton.
All after school activities are canceled (except driving ed) and the school is enacting its crisis plan and bringing in counselors for students.
