O'boro adds jobs during slow national recovery

OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

Some good economic news in Daviess County, as the country continues to climb out of the recession, Owensboro has actually added over 1,200 new jobs.

And that means new companies.

Four years ago VE Creative was just starting out. Now the company that designs websites, social media and apps brings in close to a half million dollars in gross revenue each year.

Founder Nathan Cruse says Owensboro's economic climate made it possible for the company to thrive.

"A business like ours...you know...that's just starting up...we've got to make sure that we put ourselves in a position to where you know we can be competitive and we thought that we could be competitive in the Owensboro market," said Cruse.

Overall, economic leaders believe the city has weathered the recession storm well.

"We're fortunate that we didn't have all our eggs in one basket," said Nick Brake with the Ecomonic Development Corporation. "That everything wasn't in automotive or in construction and those were industries that were hit really hard."

Owensboro is considered a low cost community, another benefit to starting a business here.

"You get a lot for your dollar," said Brake.

Which Nathan Cruse feels helps VE Creative grow into the future.

"The biggest thing was 'Hey...this city...you know...it's gonna lift us up," said Cruse.

VE Creative encourages others who want to start their own businesses to invest in what they call a welcoming community like Owensboro.

Health care is one of the industries that continues to grow in Owensboro.

The city says that adults going back to school has also helped the economy during the recession.
