Are you prepared for an emergency?

DAVIESS CO., KY (WFIE) -

Its always good to be prepared, but this month they're taking it a step further in Kentucky.

Some special classes are being held to reinforce the concept in Daviess County.

Community Emergency Response Team, or C.E.R.T., training will take place in the Emergency Operations Center in the basement of the Daviess County Courthouse.

Since emergencies can happen at any time and often without warning, the goal of these classes is to help residents prepare for the worst.

The training is free and participants receive a backpack filled with safety equipment when they complete the program.

Topics range from general emergency preparedness to basic fire suppression and even the history of terrorism.

Organizers say these classes are important because help may not be able to get to residents so easily in an emergency.

Vicky Connor with Daviess County EMA said, "The emergency responders are gonna be overwhelmed and the citizens are there kind of by themselves for a while until the utility crews can come in and the emergency responders can get there so we wanna train these people to be able to take care of themselves and their neighbors before the responders arrive."

Classes meet on Monday nights from six until nine until November 5.

These are free and the knowledge gained could save your life.
