EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Evansville Police Department's new tool to fight drug problems is proving to be working.
The 800 block of Jefferson is where The Guardian was parked on Tuesday night.
The truck is equipped with four cameras that zoom and rotate to watch for crime.
On Tuesday, Police Chief Billy Bolin talked to 14 News about The Guardian at the 39th Citizen's Academy. The academy gives the public a chance to learn how the police department works.
Chief Billy Bolin showed the renovations going on at the department's headquarters.
If you haven't been downtown, the police department's new lobby is open and officials are working to install new soundproof interview rooms with new recording equipment.
As for The Guardian, the truck been out now for the week, and so far, it seems to be working.
"The next day after we used it, we had a neighbor call from that street call our sector office extremely happy saying it was the quietest night her streets had in months. She says they didn't know how long it had been since they felt that safe in the neighborhood," Bolin said.
Chief Bolin says he is also looking into possibly starting police reserves. Those would be trained citizen's who help the department if needed.
But, Bolin says those discussions are in the very beginning and it would be a long time before any decision would be made.
