OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) -

It looks like the speed limit will be lowered because of the Smothers Park traffic on Veterans Boulevard.

Veterans Boulevard runs along the new Smothers Park, and city leaders think cars go too fast up and down that road. That's why they're recommending the speed limit be changed from 30 miles per hour to 15 miles per hour.

City officials have also asked the road department to conduct a study to look at possibly closing Smothers Park to vehicles altogether.

City leaders are also looking at changing the speed limit for other downtown streets to 25 miles per hour instead of 30 miles per hour.

"The way it was designed was without curbs. It is a seamless walk from Smothers Park straight to the street. There is not curb height differences so pedestrians, bicyclists whoever is walking freely into the streets, that way it's just an extra precaution for pedestrians," said Public Works' Bailey Bennett.

The city commission will take a final vote on the speed limit change of Veterans Boulevard sometime in early October.
