EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -

Some local students from Resurrection School took part in a candle lighting service on Tuesday to remember those killed in the September 11th attacks, 11 years ago.

Songs were sung and 11 candles were lit. One to represent each year that's passed since September 11th, 2001.

"We remember the people who gave their lives and protected our country. We remember them today," said seventh grader Elaina Bradley.

Bradley was one year old in 2001. She, just like many of her classmates, are too young to remember that day.

They've had to learn about it from their parents, teachers, and books.

"I've learned that at the World Trade Center in 2001, there were planes that destroyed it and it's really sad. We're still working to heal from that," Bradley said.

"It's important to let them know where it was, why it happened, and what we can do to continually help our country recover from it," said seventh grade teacher Jennifer Baehl.

Baehl organized the candle lighting service. She felt it was important because it's these students, she says, who will be responsible for raising awareness about 9/11 in years to come.

"I kind of put it back to like my parents always talked about John F. Kennedy being shot and how that affected the whole country at the time. How they had to teach us about that experience, and now, we're doing the same thing with this generation with the 9/11 attacks," Baehl said.

The school holds a service inside the chapel each year to remember this day.

Staff members say the event is also discussed in the classrooms.
