Hoosier's Roberson has a surgery

Indiana quarterback Tre Roberson could return to campus as early as Wednesday following surgery on his broken lower left leg.

Coach Kevin Wilson doesn't expect Roberson to be back on a football field any time soon.

Wilson told radio listeners Monday night that the sophomore had a "clean" break in his lower leg, that doctors inserted a titanium rod into Sunday and that it would likely take Roberson five to six months to make a full recovery.

"He has high goals, high standards and he's a special kid, and we will have him for three more years," Wilson said on his weekly radio show, again explaining the Hoosiers would redshirt Roberson.

Wilson is not scheduled to speak with reporters until Tuesday.

Roberson, Indiana's 2010 Mr. Football, was hurt during the first half of Saturday's 45-6 victory over Massachusetts.

As he ran toward the end zone, Roberson stretched for the goal line and several players came down on Roberson's left side, pinning his leg underneath him. Trainers immobilized the leg on the field, then lifted him onto a stretcher and he was driven off of the field in an ambulance.

Junior college transfer Cameron Coffman replaced Roberson in the game and is expected to start this weekend when Indiana (2-0) hosts Ball State (1-1). Indiana has only one other quarterback on its roster - true freshman Nate Sudfeld.

Coffman was 16 of 22 for 159 yards and one touchdown in his Indiana debut on Saturday. Sudfeld went 3 for 4 for 28 yards in his first college game.

But Roberson did not travel home with his teammates following the game at Gillette Stadium, staying behind to have surgery.

Wilson said Roberson's mother has been with her son, and that Roberson is already contemplating his future.

"He's talking about (Robert Griffin III) and how he had a broken ankle his sophomore and how he went on to have a pretty good career," Wilson said, referring to last year's Heisman Trophy winner.

Roberson took over as Indiana's starting quarterback for the final five games in 2011 - the first true freshman quarterback to ever start at quarterback for the Hoosiers. He finished the season going 81 of 142 for 937 yards with three TDs and six interceptions. He also ran for 426 yards and two more scores last season, but was 0-5 as a starter.

Coaches spent much of the offseason working with Roberson on revamping throwing motion and trying to help him become a more accurate passer. It was paying dividends.

Roberson was 33 of 50 for 368 yards with two TDs and one interception and had an efficiency rating of 137.02 before the injury. He also had 12 carries for 133 yards and three touchdowns, including scoring runs of 50 and 39 yards against UMass.
