EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
September is National Literacy Month and the Evansville-Vanderburgh Public Library is hosting several events, including a way to win a $50 gift card.
One of the events this month is a scavenger hunt coming up at the end of September. In order to participate, you have to read a couple books, so you might want to start now.
It's all part of the One Book, One Community Program.
The scavenger hunt will be online and it's based on the books Flash and Bones and Virals.
Participants have until September 28 to read the books and then on that day, you can get online and download the scavenger hunt answer sheet, or you can also pick one up at any local library branch.
The clues will continue until October 16, when the hunt is over.
Two winners will be announced on October 20.
The Evansville-Vanderburgh Public Library tells 14 News the One Book, One Community Program aims to develop a community built around the experience of people reading and talking about the same book.
"A lot of times it will help people get to know people they didn't know. Maybe have something to talk about and sometimes the topics are controversial, sometimes they're just fun. Sometimes they're really interesting and you learn a lot, but you meet people from all walks of life," said Melissa Davis with the EVPL.
Also, during the month of September, if you encourage your family and friends to sign-up for a library card, you'll both be entered to win a $50 Walmart gift card. They just have to tell the library staff member who referred them when they sign-up for their card. If you refer multiple people, you'll be entered to win multiple times.
Kathy Reichs, the author of the required reads, will be
speaking at Victory Theatre in Evansville on November 1 at 7:30 p.m. It's free and
open to the public.
A fun fact about Kathy. She's the author that
inspired the TV series, Bones.
