EVANSVILLE, IN (WFIE) -
Evansville Police on Monday night are looking for someone who stole a car while the driver was making newspaper deliveries on the city's southeast side.
Monday afternoon, police did get a tip that lead them to the missing car. It was parked near Walnut and 41 at the Nazarene Baptist Church.
Police say it had a flat tire, the keys and Sunday's newspapers still inside, but no word on who might have taken the newspaper man's vehicle.
"I feel sorry for the guy," said Sandra Simmons.
Sandra Simmons lives right where the victim's car was last seen near the 1500 block of MacArthur Cirle.
"I assume he makes his living that way and it's bad enough to have your car stolen, and then your source of income is destroyed, too," Simmons said.
Simmons says she's been getting her newspaper delivered for years, and by the same person, too.
"I always find the newspaper on my doorstep, where I can just reach right out and get it. He's very good about that. He always gets out of the car and its right up there," Simmons said.
The victim, a retired 66-year-old man, told police it was one of those times around 6:30 a.m. Sunday morning, he left his silver Pontiac running, went to make a delivery and on his way back noticed another man taking off in his car.
"It's not uncommon for them to leave their vehicle running because they are in and out of the vehicle so often. He left his vehicle running when he went up a house to drop a newspaper off and before he made it back to his car somebody else had jumped in the driver's seat and taken off with his car," said Sgt. Jason Cullum with the Evansville Police Department.
The delivery man wasn't able to get a good glimpse of the person who took his car.
"This guy was working somebody took advantage of him, so this makes it a little bit of a priority for us, We want to get his car back so he can continue to make his money," Cullum said.
Monday afternoon a tip lead police to the victim's car. It was found damaged, not far from the man's delivery route.
Police say the rear passenger tire was flat and the car had been driven on the rim.
They are looking at rim marks on the road in hopes of finding any leads into who stole the vehicle.
