PRINCETON, IN (WFIE) -
Historians and students are gathering at Princeton's Lafayette Park this weekend, for some Civil War history lessons.
Friday is the first day of the three-day-long Civil War Days festival. Event Coordinator Mary Ann O'Neal says over 700 grade school children visited Lafayette Park to learn about the Civil War era, from fashion, to candle making, to the life and times of President Abraham Lincoln.
O'Neal says, this year, they are commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Stone's River, a battle that featured the Indiana 58th infantry.
O'Neal says events like Civil War Days are great for hands-on learning. She says the festival is free to the public Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 9:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the afternoon.
"There's no experience like a living historian, because it brings that all to life to the students that come over," O'Neal said. "It's right here in the backyard for the people in the community to come down and experience this. So we appreciate it very much and hopefully, you know, people come out and see us."
O'Neal also says the festival will feature a vintage baseball game to be played at 1:00 Saturday afternoon, at Gil Hodges stadium.
