United Way Day of Caring kicks of its 19th year of helping local non-profits

The United Way of Southwestern Indiana had a busy day of events Friday.

The agency celebrated its 90th birthday, began its 2012 fundraising campaign and also kicked off its 19th Annual United Way Day of Caring.

More than 800 volunteers gathered at The Center, in Downtown Evansville, Friday morning for a hearty breakfast at 7:30.

Several speakers made presentations and the winner of this year's SING UNITED contest winner, Roxie Randle, serenaded the crowd.

Afterwards, the crowd of 800 fanned out and went to dozens of non-profit agencies in the area to volunteer for the day.

Some locations included Ark Crisis, Boys and Girls Club, Evansville ARC, Lampion Center, YMCA and more.

Volunteers did everything from landscaping, to reading to children to helping clean- any help that was needed.

United Way officials say the agencies receive donated work and time valuing more than $100,000.
