JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Financial shortfalls are being blamed for a disgusting situation in Jefferson County. A handful of dead hogs are piled up along Mount Olive Road and there is no sign they will be removed anytime soon. Jefferson County leaders say they just do not have the funds to clean up the problem.

Sergeant Jack Self with Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says they knew about the dead hogs since Monday. Self says unless they are obstructing the roadway or they look to be a case of animal abuse, he says they cannot do anything.

Since Jefferson County is in a financial crisis the Roads and Transportation Department is not an option either. So basically, drivers will have to wait for Mother Nature to do the work.

"It's terrible. I mean, we had our windows up and the air conditioner on in the car and when we drove by you could smell it," said Pat Drummond, a passerby of the scene.
