(NBC) -
A mother in labor loses her life in a crash
while on the way to deliver her first born.
Newlyweds and parents to be 22-year-old Brian and Megan Riggans were on their way to Chapel Hill Hospital Sunday
night, but unfortunately weather and road conditions were treacherous and
that's when tragedy struck.
"Alamance 911. Status
of emergency?," asked Dispatch.
"I can't talk. I was in
a wreck and I have a pregnant wife," Brian Riggans said.
"Where are you at
sir?"
"I can't tell you. I
don't know," Brian said.
"All right, stay on the
phone with me. Let me see if I can try and find you. Are you on East
Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road?"
Brian was coming up to a curve along East Greensboro-Chapel Hill Road around 10 p.m. Sunday when his Jeep Cherokee
hydroplaned in the pouring rain and slammed head on into a tree.
Megan, who was
in the passenger seat, was not wearing a seat belt. She hit the windshield.
Brian managed to call 911 with a broken jaw.
EMS transported Megan to Alamance Regional Medical Center where they pronounced her dead, but not before
saving her child.
Doctors delivered a baby boy whom officials say was breathing
and had a pulse. The newborn was transported to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital along
with his father.
